We are happy that you have chosen to join Independence next year and thank you for sharing the important journey of your child’s education with us. Because your family is new to our community and next year will be your first, we want to make sure you are aware of aware of a recent announcement that was made within our school community. After 14 years as the Head of The Independence School, Vicky Yatzus has announced that she will retire at the end of the 2022-2023 school year. We have been blessed to have an outstanding leader, particularly during the challenges of the recent pandemic. With the average tenure of 5-7 years for a head of an independent school, we are thankful that Vicky will have dedicated 15 years of consistent and visionary leadership at the point of her retirement.

We know that change presents opportunity and as is characteristic of The Independence School, the path forward is well-planned. The Board of Trustees has established a Search Committee to lead the work involved in identifying our school’s next great leader. To quote the President of our Board of Trustees, Amelia Wyant, in her recent letter to the Independence community, “During her time as Head, Vicky has been an exemplary steward of Independence’s mission, unwavering in her determination to inspire students to become intellectually curious individuals who possess an exceptional spirit for learning, leadership, and citizenship.” The Search Committee and Board of Trustees are committed to finding a Head who shares this vision.

Independence will mark its 45th year in 2023. Since the school was founded, our trustees administrators, faculty, and staff have upheld the values upon which the school was founded including an unwavering focus on providing an exceptional education. Our Board intends to engage a Head who will maintain that focus and continue to lead us on our current path.

This coming fall, the Search Committee will be inviting its top candidates to meet with members of the Independence community. We look forward to including you in that process.
