Trading Through Time in the 1870s Market

Students in Ms. Palmer's 7th grade Intro to the Stock Market elective recently stepped back in time for a high-stakes, two-day simulation of the 1870s stock market. Starting with a set amount of money, they navigated the years 1871-1878 using authentic historical data and market fluctuations.

The activity bridged the gap between history and finance, as the class recognized enduring companies still in business today. In addition to individual investing, students took on the roles of brokers to facilitate trades and manage transactions. Through this hands-on strategy, they gained a unique perspective on how the risks of the past paved the way for the modern economy.
