Faculty Gain Fresh Perspective from Student Presentation on Neurodiversity

Independence 7th grader Abby recently shared an inspiring and informative presentation with faculty about her experiences working alongside neurodivergent students. Drawing on her own observations and research, Abby explored the gap between textbook definitions of neurodiversity and the lived experiences of students who identify as neurodivergent.

She discussed the range of underlying conditions that can shape how students learn and connect, emphasizing the importance of understanding the “why” behind behaviors rather than relying on labels. Abby also highlighted the meaningful role of the Star Kids Club, which creates space for students of all abilities to learn from one another, celebrate differences, and build community.

Her thoughtful presentation sparked valuable conversation among teachers and underscored the power of student voice in shaping a more inclusive and empathetic school environment.
