Spreading Positivity in 1st Grade

Beginning on the first day of school, our 1st graders learn that the words they choose and the attitudes they bring to school can make a powerful difference. In Mrs. Annable’s classroom, positivity is part of everyday learning. Students practice using kind words, showing gratitude, and encouraging one another to keep trying, even when something feels challenging. Whining, groaning, or negative language is replaced with reflection and a “never give up” mindset.

Through the books they read, the conversations they share, and the way they treat others, first graders learn how positive thinking can shape how they feel and how they approach their day. They are encouraged to notice what they are thankful for, celebrate their strengths, and spread kindness to classmates and adults alike.

At a recent assembly, Mrs. Annable shared these classroom practices with the entire school community, reminding us all that while all emotions are normal and important to acknowledge, the key is learning how to move forward without getting stuck in negative thoughts. By focusing on gratitude and kindness, our first graders are leading by example and showing how positivity helps create a supportive school environment.
