Order in the Court

This trimester, 8th graders had the opportunity to take Mock Trial, an elective taught by middle school English teacher Mr. McDonald. In this culminating experience, students stepped into the roles of lawyers and witnesses, working to persuade a jury composed of faculty and administrators.

Over several weeks, students collaborated in assigned teams to analyze a fictional case involving a middle school vandalism incident. Each group was responsible for dividing up roles, studying case materials, and building arguments for either the prosecution or the defense. From opening statements to witness cross-examinations and closing arguments, students demonstrated remarkable skill, quick thinking, and an overall understanding of the law. This year’s trial concluded with a dramatic verdict: the defendant was found not guilty.

A special thank you to Mary Kate Campbell, Corporate Counsel for Nemours Company (and Mr. McDonald’s sister), who graciously served as the presiding judge.
