New Birding Stations Enrich Our Campus Ecosystem

Our campus has become a little more vibrant and a lot more musical, thanks to a thoughtful gift from the Radtke family.

Following an inspiring "Walk and Talk" experience with Mr. Costello and Mrs. Harra, the family noticed an opportunity to revitalize our outdoor spaces by replacing inactive bird feeders with robust new birding stations. Their generous donation includes several bird feeder posts, a variety of specialized feeders, high-quality seed, and a year-round birdbath. This new addition provides a vital sanctuary for local wildlife and a living classroom for our students and will certainly enhance our spring 7th grade Field Ornithology elective.

For the Radtke family, this gift is deeply personal. Their passion for birding began in 2020, when the world slowed down, and they found peace in building a home garden. As they watched various birds frequent their yard, they realized they are more than just beautiful visitors; they are "garden guards" that help disperse seeds and control pests. The inspiration for this gift also hits close to home for Isabella, whose favorite bird, the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, served as the subject of her 3rd-grade research project.

"Bird watching is an activity enjoyed by the old and young. Observing avian visitors up close inspires curiosity, joy, and compassion," Elena shared. "Birds turn an ordinary day into a vibrant lesson about nature."

We are incredibly grateful to the Radtke family for their generosity.
