Honoring Founding Head of School, Dr. Ken Weinig

It is with sadness that we share news of the passing of Dr. Ken Weinig, who served as Independence's founding Head of School from 1978 to 2003. During his 25-year tenure, Dr. Weinig's accomplishments were many, and the impact of his leadership still lives on today. From procuring the land to make our current campus possible to planning the design of our learning spaces, his vision remains evident in many aspects of school life, including establishment of the instrumental music program and creation of Extended Care. Further, Dr. Weinig instituted an all-inclusive tuition policy, with the cost of field trips, athletics, and books covered as part of the tuition.

A lifelong educator and learner, he served in a range of schools and worked with students at all grade levels. We extend our condolences to Dr. Weinig’s family and join together in remembering his lasting contributions to the Independence community.
