Herpetology Elective Brings Science to Life

Independence 7th graders are diving into the world of reptiles and amphibians through a fall elective, Herpetology. This hands-on course explores the essential role these creatures play in gauging the health of our ecosystems. Students learn how amphibians serve as indicator species, helping scientists worldwide understand the effects of pollution and its potential impact on human health.

Beginning with native species of the Delmarva region, students study their habitats, evolution, and unique physical adaptations. The class combines indoor lessons with outdoor exploration, giving students the chance to apply their learning in the field while practicing safe, respectful ways to observe and engage with wildlife. A highlight of the trimester was last week’s visit from the Brandywine Zoo, during which students met a lizard, tortoise, and snake in a live animal presentation.
