Faculty Strengthen Leadership Skills Through Leadership Delaware Program

This fall, Independence’s middle school English teacher, Erika Bohman, and School Nurse, Catherine Mitchell, joined more than 40 professionals from across Delaware for a six-week leadership training program focused on becoming more impactful and innovative leaders.

Hosted by Leadership Delaware, the program brought together leaders from technology, education, nonprofits, and local businesses for an interactive and collaborative learning experience.

The course featured classroom instruction, group discussions, case studies, and weekly themed modules. Participants also completed leadership self-assessments and developed SMART goals to apply their learning within their organizations.

Each week offered new opportunities for reflection and growth, with topics such as CliftonStrengths identification, promoting change and innovation, building effective teams, communication and feedback, and public speaking. The focus on public speaking mirrors Indy’s curriculum, which recognizes it as a critical lifelong skill. The program also highlighted the value of “living in a learning zone,” remaining open to growth while also recognizing and celebrating what your team is already doing well.

Bohman and Mitchell found the experience both practical and inspiring.

"Hearing from professionals from so many different industries who are collaborating to solve complex problems was inspiring,” said Bohman. “The course helped me think more strategically about preparing our students for a rapidly changing world.”

Mitchell agreed, noting that the timing aligned perfectly with Independence’s ongoing forward-thinking with its’ strategic initiatives.

“It reinforced the importance of understanding why we do what we do,” she said. “Our school already values growth and continuous improvement, and this training provided fresh ways to celebrate successes and lead both colleagues and students with intention. With Health and Wellness taking on an even greater focus, my role is evolving, and the skills I gained in these workshops will help me guide that effort effectively.”

Their participation reflects Independence’s Strategic Vision pillar of advancing the strength of our outstanding faculty and staff. By investing in professional growth opportunities, the school continues to empower educators to lead with confidence and creativity in a constantly changing world.

Through this experience, Bohman and Mitchell are helping ensure that Independence continues to model lifelong learning, collaboration, and leadership. These qualities will inspire both colleagues and students alike.
