Exploring the Delaware Art Museum

Last Friday, the 7th grade visited the Delaware Art Museum to kick off their Art Research Projects. Each year, students select a work of art to study in depth, researching its background, analyzing its elements, and ultimately teaching their classmates about its significance.

During their visit, students explored artwork spanning a variety of time periods and mediums while participating in a “Close Looking” tour led in small groups by the museum’s art educators. Encouraged to pay attention to small details they noticed, students engaged in several learning activities, including discussion, comparison and contrast, and even drafting short stories about Howard Pyle’s pirate paintings.

It is wonderful to have cultural institutions like the Delaware Art Museum nearby. As students continue their projects, they will keep refining their close-looking and analytical skills, learning not just to see art, but to truly understand it.
