The Early Childhood (EC) program recently applied and received a Quality Improvement Award from the Delaware Department of Education, reinforcing the school’s dedication to creating meaningful, inclusive, and developmentally responsive experiences for young learners.

As a licensed center, Independence participates in Delaware’s Quality Improvement System, which supports early childhood programs in strengthening their practices and outcomes. The awards are part of a broader initiative grounded in the principles of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)—a process that encourages systematic and intentional growth based on data and reflection.
   
Independence began this journey with a self-evaluation focused on enhancing inclusive practices and providing environments that respond to the developmental needs of all children. That data guided the process to identify goals, build an improvement plan, access relevant supports, and monitor progress.

Among the identified goals is the integration of self-regulation and sensory tools into the classroom, providing children with the necessary tools and skills to manage their emotions, build confidence, and remain engaged in their learning. Another outcome was the creation of a partnership with an occupational therapist from Centreville Layton School to provide professional development, empowering faculty and staff to expand their expertise and enrich the student experience.

Through thoughtful evaluation, innovation, and a deep commitment to student well-being, The Independence School’s Early Childhood Program continues to lead with intention and impact.
