Drawing in Dimension

Recently, our middle school artists have been building their skills through engaging value and shading projects centered on familiar objects. Seventh graders in the Fundamentals of Drawing elective created observational candy cane drawings, using a range of graphite pencils and techniques to study highlights, midtones, and shadows while building depth and dimension. In sixth grade art, students explored similar concepts through hot chocolate mug drawings. Working from reference images, they practiced translating three-dimensional forms onto paper and experimented with tonal variation to create realistic light and shadow.

Across both projects, the focus has been on strengthening students’ understanding of value through shading and light while encouraging close observation, thoughtful technique, and growing confidence with drawing materials.
