From Hangars to History: 2nd Graders Dive into Aviation

Last week, 2nd grade students took a trip to the Air Mobility Command Museum just outside of Dover Air Force Base. During their visit, students had the opportunity to board a massive C-5 aircraft, explore a variety of historic planes, and learn about the important role aviation has played throughout history. Their guided tour also took them back in time through stories of airlifts during major military operations, including the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

The field trip connected directly to their year-end CKLA unit, Taking Flight: The Age of Aviation. Throughout the unit, students explore the history and science of flight while learning about pioneering aviators such as the Montgolfier brothers, the Wright brothers, Aída de Acosta, and Amelia Earhart. They also study physics concepts like lift and research the lasting social impact aviation has had on the world.
