The Independence School is pleased to announce the presentation of its Outstanding Service awards for 2020-2021 to Travis McKay, D.C., Advanced Back & Neck Pain Center, Mia Papas, Ph.D., Epidemiologist & Corporate Director of the Christiana Care Value Institute, and Deepika Thacker, M.D., Pediatric Cardiologist, Nemours Children’s Health System.
Drs. McKay, Papas, and Thacker served as medical advisors to The Independence School’s reopening committee, formed in response to the COVID 19 pandemic in the Spring of 2020.
“We have been extremely fortunate to have the advice and guidance from these three medical professionals,” said Vicky Yatzus, head of school. “They went above and beyond in answering our questions, providing expert guidance, and helping us make decisions.”
Since its inception, the medical advisors have met monthly with the reopening committee, including throughout the 2020-2021 school year. All are parents of Independence students.“We could not have had as successful a year without the input of our medical advisors. The Outstanding Service awards are in recognition for their extraordinary service to our school and our community,” added Vicky.
With thoughtful mitigation strategies in place, including expanding outdoor learning on its 90-acre campus, Independence welcomed students to return to school in person for the fall of 2020 and remained open throughout the school year.
