Eighth Grade Breakfast featured some great advice by Dr. Mia Papas '86

Among the favorite Indy traditions we were able to welcome back this year was our Eighth Grade Breakfast, which took place on June 10.  This event gives the eighth graders one last time to gather as an entire group to share a meal, receive their personalized yearbooks and gifts, and hear from an invited speaker. This year's speaker, Dr. Mia Papas, graduated from Indy in 1986 and is currently a member of our Board of Trustees. She also happens to be the parent of Zoe Symons, a member of the class of 2021.

Dr. Papas shared some of what she recalls Independence had taught her, including finding out about herself by trying out many different activities while in middle school here. She talked about literally finding her voice as she rarely spoke when she was new to the school in sixth grade. Dr. Papas encouraged the students to always be mindful of who they are as they enter high school with all the different challenges they may face and advised them to find balance in their lives.

She read a quote from Mother Teresa as she reminded the students that anything can be accomplished as a group,

"I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.”

We extend our special thanks to Ms. Linda Morel, parent of eighth grader Kennedy Morel, for the donation of breakfast from Pure Bread Deli.
