Covid-19 may have caused a halt to the construction of our outdoor classroom last spring, but now that we are back on campus, we are again on track and moving eagerly ahead to create this exciting new addition for outdoor learning and play. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 20 featuring the alumni who are leading the way in making the outdoor classroom possible.
Ashley Quill Funk ’95 and Vance Funk (parents of one current and one future Indy student) made a generous contribution in 2019 which allowed us to move the project forward. Not only have many members of our community supported the outdoor classroom with subsequent donations, but two additional Independence alumni, who also happen to be members of our Board of Trustees, are actually assisting with construction.
Amelia Julian Wyant ’90, a current parent and president of the Board, and Kevin Heitzenroder ’85, an alumni parent and immediate past president of the Board, are each assisting with the construction of the outdoor classroom through their businesses, Eastern States Construction Service and Turf Pro Inc, respectively.
The involvement and passion our alumni have shown in their support of this project is truly remarkable and appreciated by all. Construction is expected to be completed by the summer of 2021.
