Fine & Performing Arts
Building an appreciation for the arts begins early at The Independence School. Starting in The Early Childhood Division, and continuing through grade eight, students participate in general music classes.
String instrument lessons begin in grades three and instrumental lessons in grade four. Students learn to read and interpret music. Participation in The Independence School’s award-winning concert bands, jazz bands, string ensembles, and various choirs are offered as co-curricular activities.
Our full-size stage and state-of-the-art auditorium inspire young actors, set designers and sound technicians. Opportunities to appear on stage occur at every age. The annual drama club productions provide experience performing in front of an audience, as well as important behind-the-scenes responsibilities.
Art class is part of the curriculum at every grade level, with students exploring a wide variety of fine arts methods, including ceramics, in our well-equipped art rooms. Young artists are encouraged to submit entries to a variety of statewide competitions. Student work is proudly displayed in The Fasick Gallery, in hallways, offices and classrooms.
Special field trips to concerts, plays and other cultural venues begin in The Early Childhood Division and continue throughout Middle School, enriching the academic program and adding valuable real world experience.
