Art Curriculum Overview

A major feature in the art program is that it is geared to individual growth. A strong belief that the making of art is for everyone and that each student possesses creative ability is upheld. Student's performances are measured against the standard of their effort and progress. It is also believed that as a student's aesthetic sensitivity is developed through art appreciation, his or her creativity will be enhanced. Through the practice of art,  imagination and technical skills are exercised, as each student works at their own pace guided by the nature of one’s individual abilities. The student develops visual literacy through the knowledge of visual grammar. The elements and principles of art are thoroughly explored and applied to student work. Students develop a sense of pride in their work and in their ability to work through the decision-making sequence in solving artistic problems. Each student creates a portfolio of work for the academic year.

The art program seeks to educate the student in the areas of art appreciation and the practice of art. The two disciplines are coordinated in such a way that the student is able to comprehend their relationship to one another and each area enriches the other. Art history assists the student in developing the ability to perceive and visually analyze as well as to become acquainted with their own vast cultural heritage in art. Students in grades six to eight frequently work on studio projects that are based on an art historical premise and also take field trips to museums to view permanent collections and special exhibits.

The relationship of art to the external world is taught by combining art with other disciplines and with school and community events. Some examples include themes from class work, scenery for dramatic productions, posters, yearbook, program covers, invitations, etc. The art department works together with teachers in specific disciplines on integrated projects. Many of our young artists participate in an after-school art club, and others have received awards from organizations for their pieces of work.
