A DAY AT THE MUSEUM

Image

As part of their social studies curriculum, first graders spent the morning before Thanksgiving break (Nov. 20) at the Hagley Museum learning about life in a 19th-century mill village. The children were asked to do various chores, such as washing clothes and fetching water. They also baked cookies in a wood-burning stove, tried on outfits that represented the types of clothing that were worn over 200 years ago and even attended class in a one-room schoolhouse! The trip helped the first-grade students compare life today to times of the past, including how individuals and families in the community lived, what they did for entertainment and what their methods of transportation were.

HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES

Image

As part of their social studies curriculum, second-grade students visited the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation at Ridley Creek State Park on Nov. 20. The field trip gave the children hands-on experiences of the time period, including carding wool, candle making and sawing wood. They also toured a true colonial home and farm. Second graders study the colonial times in an effort to examine events and changes that have taken place over time, which will allow them to predict what might change in the future.

Today, Tuesday, Nov. 28, we recognize #GivingTuesday, self-described as "a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration." This philanthropic movement promotes the idea of giving back to your local community – through your time, through a monetary contribution or even through the power of your voice.

At Independence, we are so grateful for your support. We cannot emphasize enough how your various contributions help us to maintain the exceptional program we are able to offer your children. As the holidays and end of the year rapidly approach, we sincerely thank all the members of our community who continue to give, and we ask those who haven't yet had a chance to consider doing so.
