A WORTHY CAUSE

Image

From Sept. 25-29, the Student Government Association ran a school-wide fundraiser to help those impacted by the recent hurricanes. Our middle school students participated in a "Quarter War," where the winning homeroom would receive Rita's Water Ice, while the lower schoolers donated via a "Coin Drive." All told, Independence raised $3,395.09 to give to the American Red Cross!

After making that announcement to our Head of School, Mrs. Yatzus, second from left, members of the SGA's Executive Committee were joined by moderators Mrs. Godsey, left, and Mr. Raab, right, to surprise the victorious homeroom. Click here to see who won!

We sincerely appreciate all of the support the SGA received for this very worthy cause. We are proud to be part of such a wonderful and caring community.

SILLY SONGS AND RHYME ALONGS

By Mrs. Bernadette Gilmore, Director of Academics & Curriculum

It is 2017, and at this point in time, we know enough about brain development to know that the years up to age 5 are a very fertile time for learning. At such an important stage, why would we do anything as frivolous as singing silly songs and reciting rhymes? Don't get too serious yet. There is good reason for all of this fun.

A DAY AT THE ORCHARDS

Image

As part of their life science curriculum, kindergarten students visited Milburn Orchards on Sept. 29, to study the life cycle of an apple tree. The children enjoyed a hayride while learning about apples and the importance of bees to the life of a fruit tree. A presentation by Johnny Appleseed and a trip to the petting zoo also highlighted the morning. The students saw the packing plant and the walk-in refrigerator, which can keep apples fresh and ready to eat for an entire winter. But, perhaps the best part of the field trip came when each student had the chance to pick an apple from Milburn's numerous trees!
