CUBETTO THE ROBOT

For the last three years, Mr. Raab has been teaching coding to grades 1-8 in technology education class. Now, Mrs. Samuels and Mrs. Scarpone's kindergarten students are having their own hands-on experience with coding using a toy called Cubetto. A small wooden robot, Cubetto moves along a map according to the code the children enter. The code is "written" by placing colored cubes along a control board to indicate direction and actions.

Like so many lessons in kindergarten, work with Cubetto touches upon multiple areas of the child's development. In addition to the foundational concepts of coding, students are also learning problem solving, communication, creativity, visual-spatial awareness and mapping skills. Look out for some future technology stars who are honing their skills today in the halls of Independence!

A GREAT TIME AT THE GARDENS

On April 27, first grade went to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square to learn about how measurement and math are involved in and around the gardens. The first graders measured using standard and non-standard formats, reviewed symmetry and estimation skills, made a paper garden in which flowers needed to be six inches apart and also studied 2-D and 3-D shapes in the Topiary Garden.
