Celebrating French culture
Our French students in grades 6-8 attended "La Journée de la Francophonie" on March 22 at University of Delaware's Trabant Student Center, where they communicated in French with native French speakers and UD students and faculty. They also viewed exhibits prepared by UD students representing various francophone areas of the world. Everyone would likely agree, though, that participating in the Afro-Caribbean dance workshop served as the highlight of the day. The students had a great experience celebrating the culture and language of places that speak French.

A SIMPLE GUIDE TO LYME DISEASE PREVENTION
By Mrs. Denise Axe, School Nurse
Warmer weather is finally here, and many of us will be taking more walks in the park, playing sports outside, or just enjoying nature. After recently attending the Blue Hen Nursing Symposium entitled "Lyme Disease 2017," I want to share some important information regarding the disease and how we can all be proactive in protecting ourselves and our children from contracting Lyme.
START THE ROBOT REVOLUTION
On March 21, fifth-grade students visited The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to check out the Robot Revolution and Your Brain exhibits. Both support the STEM curriculum, since the fifth graders participate in a science unit about robots and robotics, in addition to studying the brain and its functions in Learning Applications (LeApps™).
GREAT SCHOOLS, CLEAN STREAMS
Our Green Service Club recently raised money through a Dress-down Day to purchase 40 new recycling bins, which were delivered to locations around the school in March. Now you can help us continue with our environmental projects at Independence! New Castle County's "Great Schools, Clean Streams 2017 Pledge Drive" is underway, and we're asking you to take the online pledge to keep harmful cooking grease and oils out of Delaware's waterways. By doing so, you will also be helping our school to potentially win money! Spread the word and click here to go online today to sign the pledge. The contest ends Thursday, April 20, so please don't delay!
