Independence inspires students to become independent, intellectually curious individuals who possess an exceptional spirit for learning, leadership and citizenship. This year's Student Government Association President, Rohit Mathur, exemplifies that mission, having recently organized a wonderful fundraiser to benefit the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation.

Rohit first discovered the B+ Foundation after learning about the success of University of Delaware's UDance, a year-long endeavor at the school to raise awareness for childhood cancer.

"I have had family members affected by cancer, so this cause is important to me," Rohit said. "After visiting the B+ website to learn more about the goals of the foundation, I was inspired to initiate a fundraiser at Independence to try to make a difference."

The eighth grader then reached out on his own to the B+ Foundation and ultimately helped raise $1,590.50 from a dress-down day and dance on Jan. 20.

"(The money raised) can help around three families that have children with cancer pay their bills and get the proper treatment needed," Rohit said. "It is extremely rewarding to see that the Independence community is so enthusiastic and generous, and it is especially touching to recognize that we made a difference in people's lives."

Rachel Strauss, Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation Program Manager, visited Independence on Feb. 2, when Rohit and his fellow SGA Executive Officers presented her with a check.
