Admissions: Overview

The best way to know if Independence is right for you is by touring our campus, spending time in our classrooms, and speaking with members of our faculty and administration. We welcome your inquiry - either in person, by phone, or through our website. Once you've contacted us, a tour and preliminary conferences will be arranged.

We invite students in the average through gifted range, who thrive in a structured, caring atmosphere, and who will have the best opportunities to flourish in our community of learners to join us. New students find support, encouragement, respect, and friendship, beginning with their first day at Independence. We provide a safe and nurturing community for students -- physically, intellectually, and emotionally.

Early Childhood I and II Candidates

If you are interested in applying for Early Childhood I and II, you are welcome to apply as far in advance as you wish. Early Childhood I and II candidates will participate in the Gesell Development Observation. Early Childhood II candidates will also attend a class visit during the academic year prior to entering. These assessments and visits allow our Early Childhood Division faculty and staff to become more acquainted with your child, and help you get to know us. Contracts for ECI are offered beginning in December for the following September; EC II contracts are offered beginning in January. Children must be three years old by September 1 of the year in which they will enter ECI and they must be four years old by September 1 of the year in which they will enter ECII.

Kindergarten through Grade Eight Candidates

All candidates for our kindergarten through grade eight may apply as early as September of the year prior to entering. Kindergarten candidates must be five years old by September 1 of the year in which they will enter. They will have a class visit in the year prior to entering. All first grade candidates are asked to attend a similar class visit. Students in grades two through eight will visit the school for part of a day with their prospective grade, partnered with a class "buddy". They will spend the day going to classes and meeting with our faculty. Candidates will also visit with the respective Division Head and our Director of Admission. Candidates for grades four through eight are asked to complete a writing sample during their visit.

The application process for Kindergarten through grade eight also includes Admission testing. Specific information about the tests and testing dates is available through the Admissions office and on the Admission Process section of this website.

The Independence School admits students of any race, color, religion, sex, and national or ethnic origin who demonstrate sufficient promise of academic success, parent-student agreement with and subscription to the school's philosophy and regulations, and the satisfaction of financial obligations.

Grade Placement is determined by the school and does not constitute a part of the Enrollment Contract.
