Physical Education
Overall Objectives
In the physical education program, students develop a level of fitness (mental and physical) which equals or surpasses the national norms for that particular age group. Students are exposed to a variety of experiences that deal with the physical and emotional skills associated with sports and athletics. In an environment that is safe and fun, students learn to work cooperatively toward common goals, building a sense of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Through physical activity and fitness, students learn about themselves, growing in both self esteem and respect for others.
Kindergarten and First Grade
Students learn basic body movement and motor skills with attention to directionality, balance, coordination, and fitness. They practice cooperation and ability to socialize while activities increase awareness of themselves and their surroundings.
Second and Third Grade
Students learn movement and motor skills with attention to coordination, cooperation, fitness, and socialization with peers. Students are introduced to basic sports skills as well as to scoring and game rules.
Fourth and Fifth Grade
Students learn to communicate and cooperate while participating in games, stunts, fitness, activities, and sports. They are introduced to lead-up sport skill games and strategies. Students are also introduced to dance and become aware of its physical and social benefits.
Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Grade
Students apply their knowledge of sports' skills/activities primarily through participation; in addition, however, they also learn the history of a sport, it's rules, it's courtesies and strategies. Fitness activities, tumbling, and dance (modern and square) are integral parts of the program. Students also engage in activities that emphasize the importance of communication, cooperation, and a healthy lifestyle.
