Lower School
Welcome to the Lower School section of our website. The Lower School includes grades one through five with four classrooms per grade level. Each classroom has one homeroom teacher that is responsible for teaching the language arts subjects, math, social studies, and science with a structured but caring approach. The primary grades (grades1-3) are self-contained with some regrouping for math, while the intermediate grades (grades 4-5) use a departmentalized approach. All lower school students attend specialty classes in art, music, computer education, health, and foreign language (French, Spanish, German, or Latin) each week.
As the children progress from grade one to grade five, special attention is given to establishing sound work habits and good citizenship. Our teachers strive to provide an atmosphere of self-worth by using positive reinforcement, maintaining challenging but realistic expectations, and creating an environment of mutual respect. Grade levels work together to coordinate learning activities that enhance an understanding of responsibility and self-confidence. The presentations of special assemblies, middle school drama presentations, choral and band concerts, and special classroom projects are just a few of the activities that help to create a sense of community throughout the school.
The opportunity to participate in chorus begins in first grade. Strings and instrumental music begin in grades three and four respectively. Intramural sports and academic clubs are part of the extra-curricular program in grades four and five.
