Curriculum Overview

Welcome to the Lower School Curriculum portion of our website. The academic program of The Independence School has been developed for students of average through gifted ability who strive in a structured environment. An established sequential curriculum of the Lower School (grades one through five) helps to maintain the continuity from one grade level to the next, and is periodically reviewed by curriculum coordinators. The homogenous grouping of the students (generally according to verbal and mathematical skills) allows for challenge and the opportunity to meet high academic standards. Not only is there emphasis on reading and language arts development, but also the subjects of math, science, and social studies. Each is enriched by many hands-on activities, clubs, and field trips, which play an important role throughout the curriculum.

Study skills, incorporated throughout each subject area, are designed to help students achieve the necessary skills it takes to be organized and efficient. The skills presented at the earliest levels are maintained, expanded, and strengthened as each student moves from first grade through fifth grade. Three basic areas of study, listening skills, organizational skills, and language arts skills, are addressed at each grade level.

Homework to reinforce classroom skills begins in moderate amounts in grade one and gradually increases as the students progress from grade to grade. Report cards contain letter grades based on objective criteria and actual achievement. They are complemented by ratings of effort and conduct, as well as teacher written personal comments about each student.

Standardized tests are given toward the end of each year to objectively assess student achievement for the year in selected aptitude and skill areas. Copies are in each student’s cumulative folder and results may be used by teachers and parents to better understand and address each student’s academic strengths and weaknesses.

We take great pride in the professionalism of the faculty whose caring attitude provides a supportive atmosphere for our students. A great deal of parent involvement and close communication between the home and school also provide wonderful support for the total education of each child. The home plays an integral part in supporting the academic requirements of the school. In addition, exposure to the fine arts, values, and morals establish a well-rounded program.
